4. Why did the city tear down the Grand Hotel?: This seems to be a commonly held misconception. The City did NOT tear down the Grand Hotel. The site is privately owned and the owners made a business decision to tear it down. The building was structurally unsound from years of under investment and non-repair - by other owners - and had asbestos which required special handling and disposal. The City of Apache Junction has maintained a very close dialog with the current owners on possible revitalization of the site and is willing to consider a wide variety of re-uses. Current economic conditions and extremely tight commercial credit markets have not yet been resolved to allow for a successful project plan to come forward.
