StoryWalk at Prospector Park

Prospector Park will begin telling stories with a grant received by the Apache Junction Public Library.

The library recently received an $8,090 grant from the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records to create a StoryWalk®, a series of signs featuring sequential pages of a children’s picture book spread through an outdoor space. The project will be displayed at the city’s Prospector Park, 3015 N. Idaho Rd.

“This is just an excellent way for families to get out, do something active, do something in the outdoors and read a story,” said Library Director Pam Harrison. “We have a great chance of bringing people from the park to the library and from the library to the park.”

On Dec. StoryWalk 23-cropped10, the library unveiled the project, which includes the installation of 18 aluminum posts and frames that will hold the pages of the books.

“The goal of this project is to increase literacy skills while promoting physical activity,” Harrison said. “Community members will benefit because StoryWalk® will enhance Prospector Park by promoting family engagement with literacy and learning in a nontraditional outdoor environment that encourages physical activity in a shared community space.”StoryWalk 20

Under the project, the pages displayed are regularly replaced to guarantee a new experience for repeat users. A free pass to the Apache Junction Multi-Generational Center will be awarded to children of families who complete a short survey at the end of the StoryWalk®.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier. This project is supported by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
