The city consists of approximately 18 miles of alleys utilized for property access, utility work and points of ingress for emergency vehicles. The Public Works department is committed to keeping every mile safe, clean and in compliance with city code.
The city and it's residents share responsibility for maintaining city's alleys. The Apache Junction city code requires residents to maintain their alleys from the borders of their property line to the center of the alleyway. The Public Works department will maintain the vehicular-traveled center of the alleys whereas the residents then need to maintain the outside 4-5 feet. The city code's intent is to help keep the alleys clean and well-kept, which is a deterrent for illegal dumping and other activities. Code requirements also help insure that utility and emergency vehicles can maneuver safety through alleys to ensure a quick and safe response to emergencies. The city's maintenance will generally consist of nuisance weed control and grading of the alley's centrally traveled surface in March/April and September/October.
